RECENT FUNDING EVENTS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fuhu Plans Streaming Service For Nabi Tablet ---- Los Angeles-based Fuhu, the maker of the popular nabi children's tablets, is planning a big launch into the streaming movie, music, and media market this week, according to reports. According to reports, Nabi is planning to launch a $4.99 per month service called nabi Pass which will let gets get access to movies, shows, music, e-books, and interactive games. Fuhu has quietly risen to become of the fastest growing technology companies in Los Angeles, and recently topped the Deloitte Fast 500 list for Los Angeles. According to research firm NPD, Nabi sold over 1.5 million of its tablets in 2013 and leads the children's tablet market. The company is led by Robb Fujioka. Snapchat Snags Investment Banker For Strategy Position ---- Venice-based messaging app developer Snapchat has hired a high profile, technology investment banker onto its team, the company disclosed Monday. Snapchat has hired Imran Khan, who had most recently been head of Internet banking at Credit Suisse, as its Chief Startegy Officer. Khan has worked on IPOs of Alibaba, Zalando, King Digital, Weibo, and Jumei, and also had served at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. as an analyst. Western Digital Pays $100K To Resolve Chinese Compliance Issue ---- Irvine-based Western Digital reported this morning that it has paid $100,000 and restructured a department, in order to put to rest two, non-compliance matters raised by China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), related to WD's acquisition of HGST back in 2012. The startup--backed by Mission Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Tsing Capital, Infinite Potential Technologies, Presidio Ventures, and CEC Capital--said it rolled out its HD-Energy Technology for Li--ion batteries, which it says enables high density, rechargeable Li-ion batteries with more than four times the energy density of conventional batteries. The company says it is aiming its technology for us in smartphones, tablets, ultra-thin/hybrid notebook PCs, and wearable devices. RealD In Technology Licensing Deal ---- Los Angeles-based 3D movie projection technology developer RealD said today that it has licensed some of its technology to theater screen manufacturer Harkness Screens International Limited. Financial details of the licensing deal were not announced. RealD said it licensed its Precision White Screen Technology, which helps provide substantially brighter screens on both 2D and 3D movies. RealD says its technology provides high quality 2D and 3D images with better brightness uniformity and wider viewing angles. CurbStand Names CTO, CFO ---- Los Angeles-based CurbStand, the venture-backed developer of valet parking apps, said this morning that it has named Ethan Kravitz as its Chief Technology Officer, and Frank Mastronuzzi as Chief Financial Officer. The company said Kravitz has previously served at Rumr and Invoca, and has more than eight years of experience in the field. The company said that Mastronuzzi has more than 15 years of experience in the financial area. Mastronuzzi's LinkedIn profile indicates he was a co-founder of OneGoodLove.com, and has also served at Michael S. Smith Inc, American Greetings Interactive, MyLife/Reunion.com, Match.com, Motorola, and Deloitte. mobileStorm Spins Out mPulse To Tackle Healthcare Opportunity ---- Los Angeles-based mobile marketing firm mobileStorm said Monday that it has spun off a new startup, mPulse, which is aiming to address a number of opportunities in the healthcare communications area. mPulse said it will help health plans, hospitals, pharmacies, wellness companies, and exchanges better engage with consumers. The two companies said the new company will extend the technology and capabilities developed by mobileStorm over the past fifteen years. mobileStorm will continue to be headed by Jared Reitzin, with the new healthcare startup being led by Chris Nicholson. Nicholson was most recently VP and COO at Humana Wellness. mobileStorm said the split comes due to a the success and amount of business out of its healthcare division. CollegeHumor Seeks Buyer, Says Report ---- Los Angeles-based online humor site CollegeHumor is reportedly on the block, with majority owner IAC looking to sell its stack in the company for $100M, According to Fortune. The report cited "sources familiar with the situation" in the move. Apparently, IAC has been shopping CollegeHumor.com around to companies due to the boom in online content activity, including the recent sales of Maker Studios, Fullscreen Media, BigFrame, and Stylehaul--all local Los Angeles multi-channel networks (MCNs). CollegeHumor joins FunnyOrDie, another Los Angeles comedy property, in making the rounds of buyers. http://www.socaltech.com/collegehumor_seeks_buyer_says_report/s-0058125.html Sony PlayStation Network Knocked Offline Overnight ---- It looks like Sony just can't get a break from hackers nowadays, as news came Monday that Sony's Playstation Network (PSN) was knocked offline for hours on Sunday night, as a result of a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the gaming service. Sony has been dealing with ongoing hacker activity against its service for months. Apparently, the group behind the DDoS attack on Sony was also behind a similar DDoS attack on Xbox Live on Friday.
