The funding came from Advance Publications and Wellington Capital Management, and also included the company's existing investors, IVP, Learn Capital, Maveron, Rethink Education, WTI, and others. General Assembly offers up a wide range of classes on coding, design, marketing, and more, as well as acts as a host to countless community groups, meetups, and events. Elcelyx Therapeutics Gets $40M For Diabetes Treatment ---- San Diego-based Elcelyx Therapeutics, which is developing treatents for type 2 diabetes, said this morning that it has raised $40M in a Series E funding round. The funding came from new investor Sailing Capital, Clough Capital Partners, as well as existing investors Morgenthaler Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Technology Partners, and GSM Fund LLC. Elcelyx is developing a product called Metformin Delayed Release (Metformin DR), which it says is aimed at around 40 percent of type 2 diabetes patients, who cannot use the current forms of metformin due to contraindications or poor tolerability to the treatment. Elcelyx is led by Alain Baron, M.D., and is in the midst of enrolling for a Phase 2b trial of its compound. According to the company, the name change is aimed at communicating the change to the company's ownership, its new management team, and its new production site in California. Karma Automotive is now owned by Chinese automotive firm Wanxiang Group, which acquired Fisker out of bankruptcy in 2014. Karma Automotive also said it has a new assembly facility here in Southern California for its vehicles. Fisker's first--and only--vehicle was named the Fisker Karma. Karma Automotive did not give any updates an when it plans to start shipping cars again. http://www.socaltech.com/fisker_automotive_becomes_karma_automotive/s-0062178.html San Diego Startup Plans New Video-Based Dating App ---- San Diego-based Wyldfire, which develops online dating apps, said today that it plans on launching a new, video-focused dating app it says avoids the "hook-up" culture of current dating apps. The company said its new app, Heartbeat, will launch in November, but will be different from current apps in that a "team of girls" must pre-approve guys who join the app, and that only the females on the app can initiate video chats with others. The company claims its app will help establish "genuine human connection" and ensure safety. The startup is led by Brian Freeman. http://www.socaltech.com/san_diego_startup_plans_new_video_based_dating_app/s-0062176.html TenOnTen Ventures Gets $13.18M In New Venture Fund ---- Los Angeles-based TenOnTen Ventures, the venture capital investor founded by David Waxman and Gil Elbaz, has found $13.18M in commitments for a new venture fund, from 21 different investors, according to a regulatory filing by the fund. Details on the new fund--which is still in the midst of fundraising--have not yet been announced by the investment firm. According to the filing, the fund is now targeting to raise $20M in TenOneTen Ventures, L.P., in an effort which was started back in August of last year. Waxman and Elbaz are both longtime Los Angeles startup executives; Waxman was the founder of Firefly, PeoplePC, and Spotrunner; Elbaz was the founder of Applied Semantics, and is now CEO of Factual. Jemae Finds $1.3M For Fashion Startup ---- Los Angeles-based Jemae, a fashion startup which offers up designer products which help benefit humanitarian projects, said Wednesday that it has raised $1.3M in a seed funding round. The funding came from strategic investors JS Apparel, Inc. and Katmandu, Inc.
