SpaceX launched its JCSAT-16 mission from Cape Canaveral at 1:26AM EDT on Sunday, August 14th, delivering a commercial communications satellite for SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). The satellite--carrying Ku-band and Ka-Band transponders--is a backup satellite for SKY Perfect, which serves Asia, Russia, Oceania, Middle East and North America, and also broadcasts "SKY PerfectTV!", a satellite television service in Japan. Airpush Adds Device Awareness, Targeting To Mobile Ads ---- Los Angeles-based mobile ad network operator Airpush is adding mobile device targeting and detection to its ad network, in a partnership with ad technology provider Afilias, the two said this morning. According to the two, Airpush is using technology from Alias for device detection and targeting on its advertising network for Android and iOS apps. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Airpush, led by Asher Delug, offers up an mobile ad network made up of over 150,000 apps on Android and iOS. Syncromatics Buys Mobilitat ---- Los Angeles-based Synchromatics, a developer of transportation tracking and dispatch software, said this morning that it has acquired Mobilitat, a developer of dispatch and scheduling software for the public transportation market. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Mobilitat was based in Wyoming, where it will continue to have offices. Synchromatics is led by Ian Sephton. Mobilitat's system provides an Android-based mobile data terminal (MDT) for dispatching public transportation. Clearlake Capital Sells NetMotion Wireless ---- Santa Monica-based private equity investor Clearlake Capital Group announced this morning that it has sold Netmotion Wireless, a developer of mobile security software, to The Carlyle Group. Financial terms of the sale was not announced. Clearlake Capital acquired NetMotion Wireless back in 2012. NetMotion Wireless develops mobile security software for mobile devices, and was based in Seattle. Clearlake Capital said it expects the sale to complete in the third quarter of 2016. NetMotion was advised by Evercore Partners in the deal, with Atlas Technology Group serving as financial advisor to the company's board. Arena Pharmaceuticals Names Business Head ---- San Diego-based Arena Pharmaceuticals announced this morning that it has named Vincent Aurentz as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer. The developer of small molecule drugs, with potential treatments for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and pulmonary arterial hypertension, said Aurentz joins from Epirus Biopharmaceuticals, where he was Chief Business Officer. He also has served at HemoShear Therapeutics, Merck KGaA, Quintiles, and Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). Dodgers Back Startup Aimed At Real World Interaction ---- The Los Angeles Dodgers have backed a Silicon Valley startup which says it is developing software to help bring engagement into real world venues and bricks-and-mortars locations. Sunnyvale-based Xperiel says it has raised $7M in funding, from several members of Google's board, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Andy Bechtolsheim, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems.Xperiel says its system can "unlock the power of physical interactivity" using GPS, beacons, and augmented reality, much like Pokemon Go and Uber. It's unclear why the Dodgers invested, however, a quote on Xperial's website from CFO Tucker Kain says Xperiel's technology is being used to "turn our ballpark into a giant digital ecosystem." http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=76582 Axiom Materials Gets Funding, Investment ---- Santa Ana-based Axiom Materials, a developer of advanced composites for the aerospace, defense, automobile, energy, and other industries, is in a recapitalization and investment deal with private equity investor Sorenson Capital. Financial details of the investment and recap were not announced by the companies. The two son Friday that the deal involves a "significant" investment from Sorenson Capital, along with Yukon Partners. Axiom Materials, which was founded by Johnny Lincoln, Ph.D., president of Axiom Materials, will go towards R&D, expansion of its facilities, and hiring. General Assembly To Open New Location In Irvine ---- General Assembly, the provider of technical skills training, which has an active campus in Santa Monica, says it is will be opening up a new location in Irvine. General Assembly said it has not yet finalized the precise location and opening date, but says it will start hosting events and short workshops throughout Irvine ahead of the new location. The expansion is part of a global expansion for General Assembly, which is expanding to a total of 25 campuses, up from its current 12 locations. General Assembly offers up courses on everything from software coding to web design and marketing.
