Jaunt Studios--which is based in Los Angeles--said it ahs selected Daniel Arsham, Yung Jake, and Lily Baldwin & Saschka Unseld as the three artists to kick off the program. Jaunt VR is based in Palo Alto, but its creative studio arm is here in LA. Newegg In Big College Marketing Push ---- Los Angeles-based online technology retailer Newegg is in a big push to reach out to students on college campuses, saying on Thursday that it plans to visit over 80 universities, as school gets under way. According to Newegg, its new two month "Newegg College Tour" will feature a 10x20 foot tent, live DJ, gaming lounge, and chance to enter an e-sports tournament, as well as chances to win prizes. Newegg sells both technology products, but also new and used textbooks through its site. Kite Pharma Advisors Get Award ---- Santa Monica-based Kite Pharma said today that two of its key advisors and scientific collaborators have won a big award. According to Kite Pharma, Stephen A. Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., who is Chief of Surgery at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and special advisor to Kite, plus Zelig Eshhar, Ph.D., Professor emeritus from the Weizmann Institute of Science and member of Kite’s scientific advisory board, have both been selected for the Novartis Prize for Clinical Immunology, for their research into the biology of the immune system. The two received the award along with collaborator Carl June, M.D. of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who is unaffiliated with Kite Pharma. Kite is working on cancer immunotherapy products. Gawker To Shut Down After Acquisition By LA's Univision ---- Online news site Gawker Media will shut down its operations, after its acquisition by LA's Univision on Tuesday, according to the site. According to Gawker, Nick Denton, the current CEO of Gawker, told staffers that staffers will be moved to one of Gawker's other six sites, or elsewhere within Univision, as a result of the acquisition. Univision won the bid for Gawker via a bankruptcy auction on Tuesday, agreeing to pay $135M for the company. Gawker was forced into bankruptcy due to the loss of a lawsuit filed by Hulk Hogan, and funded by Silicon Valley mogul Peter Thiel. Univision has yet to announced its plans for Gawker and its assets, although the company already runs a number of online media publications. http://www.socaltech.com/gawker_to_shut_down_after_acquisition_by_la_s_univision/s-0066775.html Blue Cut Fire Visible From Space ---- The scientists at NASA JPL in Pasadena released a photo--taken by the NASA Terra satellite--which shows the huge expanse of the Blue Cut Fire, only a day after it broke out east of Los Angeles in the Cajon Pass. NASA said its photo, taken by the Multi-angle Imaging SepctroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on its Terra satellite, was taken around 11:50am PDT on August 17th, approximately a day after the Blue Cut ignited. The Blue Cut fire is now at around 31,689 acres, with more than 1500 firefighters and personnel, very large air tankers (VLATs), and more working to contain the fire--which was only 4% containment around 10:45am on Thursday. Fire officials have said that more than 34,500 homes and 82,640 people are under evacuation orders. http://www.socaltech.com/blue_cut_fire_visible_from_space/s-0066774.html YP Names New CEO ---- Los Angeles-based local search site YP said Thursday that it has named a new CEO, Jared Rowe. Rowe was most recently at Cox Enterprises, serving as President of Cox Automotive Media Solutions Group--which runs Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book, and Dealer.com. Rowe had been at Cox since 2010. Former CEO David Krantz, who has led YP since its spinoff from AT&T in 2012, will continue as a Strategic Advisor to the company. The company said Rowe will become CEO on September 1st. YP offers up local search and directory services. Snapchat Plans Growth In New York ---- Venice, California-based Snapchat is planning a big expansion in New York City, and plans to grow to around 400 people in the city, after the Empire State Development Corp offered up as much as $5M in tax break to the company. The new funding was led by Pharmstandard International, S.A., and laos included Ervington Investments Limited and Alexandria Venture Investments plus Avalon Ventures, Bregua Corporation, and WuXi Healthcare Ventures. Avelas Biosciences is developing treatments for cancer.
