In Los Angeles, contact Ryan Mondillo ([email protected]). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- HARMAN Acquired By Samsung Electronics For $8.0 Billion ---- Automotive electronics manufacturer HARMAN, which has major operations in Southern California, has been acquired by Samsung Electronics for approximately $8.0 billion, the two announced this morning. The two said Samsung will pay $112.00 per share in cash for publicly traded Harman. Samsung said the acquisition will help boost its presence in the infotainment, telematics, and sound management areas. Harman had $7.0 billion in sales for the 12 months ended September 30th, a big portion in the automotive market. Harman has a large plant in Northridge, among other operations in the area. The company is known for its JBL, Harman Kardon, Mark Levinson, AKG, Lexicon, Infinity, and Revel brands. Vubiq Networks Deploys In Seattle ---- Irvine-based Vubiq Networks, which develops ultra high speed networking equipment which uses unlicensed, 60 GHz spectrum, said it has deployed its products in Seattle, Washington, in a deal with Atlas Networks. The two said they now are providing fast Internet service to over 200 buildings in Seattle. The two did not discuss how much equipment was required in the install, or any financial term of the deal. Vubiq's hardware is currently being used for "last-mile" type of installations, as an alternative to fiber-optic cable, which is extremely expensive due to the amount of infrastructure involved in extending a fiber link. Vubiq and Atlas said it costs more than $100 per foot in such areas as Seattle to run underground fiber. Origin Code Academy Launches Evening Courses ---- San Diego-based Origin Code Academy, a coding shcool operator, said this morning that it has launched evening courses for students in San Diego. The company said it is offering up programmer training courses in the evening, to accomodate those individuals hoping to make a career shift but who can't abandon their current daytime schedule. Origin Code Academy opened its San Diego operation in August of 2015, and says it now has graduated more than 100 students. DigitalGlobe Satellite Successfully Launched From Vandenberg ---- Satellite mapping company DigitalGlobe successfully launched its latest earth imaging satellite, Worldview-4, into space, on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on Friday morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Residents of Santa Barbara and Ventura County might have been able to see the launch, if they were looking in the right direction around 10:30 a.m. PST. The successful launch had originally been scheduled for July, but was delayed due to a wildfire on the base, which is in Lompoc. That fire also affected SpaceX operations which are at Vandenberg. California is still in the grips of a now long running drought, which has driven numerous wildfires and is drying out reservoirs. http://www.socaltech.com/digitalglobe_satellite_successfully_launched_from_vandenberg/s-0068019.html Qualcomm Shows Off 5G NR Spectrum Sharing System Prototype ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm said that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, has launched a new 5G spectrum sharing system prototype, which demonstrates the use of multiple 5G spectrum for mobile broadband networks. The company said its new 5G New Radio (NR) spectrum sharing prototype uses everything from lower band, sub-6GHz to millimeter wave range high bands, across licensed, unlicensed, and shared spectrum, and is aimed at helping to drive and track the 3GPP standardization of 5G NR. CycloPure Adds Qualcomm Co-Founder White To Board ---- Encinitas-based CycloPure, which is developing technology to purify water of micropollutants, has named Qualcomm co-founder Harvey White to its board of directors. White also was Chairman and CEO of Leap Wireless, the parent company of Cricket Wireless. White also is founder of (SHW)2 Enterprises, and serves on the boards of ViaSat and the Brain Corporation. CycloPure is developing technology which removes the trace pharmaceuticals, pesticides, detergents, and cosmetics, and other organic compounds which still remain in water after conventional water treatment--but have been shown to still cause ill effects on both people and the environment. CycloPure is led by CEO Frank Cassou. Facebook Brings Dead People Back To Life, Resurrects Thousands (Kinda) ---- In the biggest resurrection this side of the Second Coming, Facebook appears to have brought back all of the thousands of people that had suddenly been marked as "dead" on its site due to a bug on Friday by late afternoon. Facebook said there was a "terrible error" that it fixed after users suddenly were getting reports from their friends that they had died, and had become "Memorialized" on the social networking site.
