Disney and Intel said they have launched a new, holiday show, which features a fleet of coordinated drones in a holiday display. According to the two, Starbright Holidays - An Intel Collaboration will run at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and will feature 300, Intel Shooting Star drones in a choreographed aerial performance. The drone show will be at the Disney Springs entertainment district. The two said the new drones--specifically designed for entertainment--will fly in a choreographed aerial performance set to holiday-themed music. The show will only be at Disney World in Florida, and not here in Southern California. http://www.socaltech.com/disney_teams_with_intel_on_drone_show/s-0068079.html SpaceX Seeks Permission To Launch Its Own 4,425 Satellite Fleet ---- Los Angeles-based SpaceX has just filed paperwork with the FCC, saying it would like permission to launch its very own fleet of 4,425 satellite into space, to provide global broadband and communications services. The satellite constellation will operate on the Ku and Ka bands, according to the filing, and are expected to have a lifetime in space of just 5 years. Qualcomm Offers Up $15,000 Bounty For Vulnerability Reports ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm, through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, said it is offering up a $15,000 bounty for vulnerabilities that "white hat" hackers are able to discover and report to the company involving the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor family. The firm said it believes it is the first program of its kind to be announced by a major silicon vendor. Qualcomm said the effort is part of an effort to help improve the security of its Snapdragon family of processors, LTE modems, and related technologies. The company said that, initially, over 40 security researchers who have worked with the company in the past will be invited to participate in the program, which it is running through HackerOne. Onestop Internet: Amazon Serious Threat To Apparel Brands ---- Los Angeles-based e-commerce service provider Onestop Internet--which is backed by Bessemer Ventures and Fung Capital USA--said it has run a new consumer survey, which shows that Amazon is a "serious threat" to its customers, apparel brands. TOMS said it has rolled out a series of watchband designs--one as "The Utility Collection" and the others as "The Artisan Collection"--both of which work with the Apple Watch. The new bands range in price from $49 to $75. TOMS--which is known for its corporate philanthropy--said that for every TOMS for Apple Watch band purchase, it will help prove one year of solar light to an individual in need. http://www.socaltech.com/toms_releases_watch_bands_for_apple_watch/s-0068077.html PacketSled CEO Resigns After Election Night Rant ---- San Diego-based cybersecurity software developer PacketSled announced on Tuesday that it has accepted the resignation of its President and CEO, Matt Harrigan, and has named CTO Fred Wilmot as interim CEO of the company. The resignation came after an election night rant where Harrigan threatened to shoot the new President-Elect, on Facebook. Those threats--involving comments on using a sniper rifle--were reported to the Secret Service. PacketSled said that Harrigan's comments do not reflect the views of the company, it's employees, investors or partners. http://www.socaltech.com/packetsled_ceo_resigns_after_election_night_rant/s-0068073.html Clarify Medical Gets $3.6M To Treat Skin Conditions ---- San Diego-based Clarify Medical, a developer of a handheld medical device used to treat psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo, has raised $3.6M in a funding round, the company announced today. The startup--whose Chairman is David F. Hale--said the funding comes from both existing and new investors. Names of those investors were not announced. Clarify Medical's CEO is Jim Sweeney, who previously founded CardioNet. The company said the funds go towards the introduction of its handheld, mobile ultraviolet light (UVB) treatment system, which is used to clear skin lesions in patients with chronic skin conditions. Mavenlink Raises $39M From Goldman Sachs ---- Irvine-based software developer Mavenlink announced this morning that it has raised $39M in a funding round from Goldman Sachs, as part of a Series D funding round. Mavenlink develops software used for work planning, managing projects, and financials, and working with and managing teams. The company, led by CEO Ray Grainger, says it has now raised a total of $84M in funding.
