Microsemi Powers Recent Iridium Satellite Launch
----
Aliso Viejo-based semiconductor maker Microsemi's chips are being used
in the ten Iridium NEXT satellites that were just launched into orbit
by SpaceX, according to Microsemi. According to Microsemi, Iridium
NEXT is making use of more than 2,000 Microsemi radiation-tolerant
field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) in its satellite constellation,
and over 200,000 Microsemi devices across the entire project.
Microsemi also said its commercial FPGAs are also being used by
SpaceX, in its launch vehicle. Microsemi says its product catalog
includes a significant number of "space-grade" products, including
radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant devices, including diodes,
rectifiers, zeners, transient voltage suppressors (TVSs) and MOSFETs,
in addition to those FPGAs.

CheapAir.com: Bitcoin Sales Up 74 Percent Due To Record High

Calabasas-based CheapAir.com, an online travel site which accepts
Bitcoin for payment for airplane flights and hotels, said on Thursday
that it has seen a surge in purchases using Bitcoin, as the electronic
currency hits new highs. According to CheapAir.com, it has seen a 74
percent year-over-year increase in Bitcoin sales over the last six
months, which it attributes to the rising value of Bitcoin--eacho of
which is now worth over $1270. ChearAir.com has been accepting Bitcoin
for the purchase of airfare since November of 2013; the company says
it has now processed just short of $15M in Bitcoin payments for
flights and hotels since 2013. CheapAir.com is led by CEO Jeff Klee.

Snap Opens Bricks And Mortar Spectacles Shop In Venice

Los Angeles-based Snap, Inc. has opened up its second,
bricks-and-mortar store selling its Spectacles sunglasses, just down
the street from its Venice headquarters. The store opened at 1pm on
Thursday, closing "at Sunset", with regular hours of 11am to Sunset
every day. Snap's Spectacles allow Snapchat users to record short
snippets of video, and automatically post them to their account. The
company has one other, bricks-and-mortar location, in New York City.
Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, just had the biggest IPO in
Southern California's history.

AeroVironment Wins EV Charger Deal with Volvo

Monrovia, California-based AeroVironment has been selected by auto
manufacturer Volvo Cars, to develop a custom electric vehicle (EV)
charging station, the company announced on Thursday. According to
AeroVironment, it will develop a custom, global EV charging station
for Volvo, to support Volvo's customers in Europe, China, and North
America. Financial details of the deal were not announced.
AeroVironment said its charging station for Volvo will allow drivers
to charge their vehicles up to three times faster than the standard
Volvo cordset included with Volvo's XC90 plug-in hybrid.

LA's Olympic Effort Seeks To Tap Into City's Technology Sector To Reach Youth

Is the key to winning the spot as host of the 2024 Summer Olympics the
company's growing technology sector? In a panel on Thursday, LA 2024's
Gene Sykes, the head of LA's efforts to win the Olympic Games, says
that tapping into LA's growing technology sector is key to helping the
Olympics reach the youth market. Sykes, at a panel at the Montgomery
Summit in Santa Monica, said that LA's technology industry could be
key to helping to attract more youth to sports. Sykes, along with
David Hill of Hilly Inc., Adam Miller of Cornerstone OnDemand, and
Brian Lee of Honest Company/LegalZoom, said that LA's technology
community is particularly well suited to helping the Olympic effort
along. Los Angeles is up against Paris, France as host city for the
Olympics in 2024.
