Thanks for your responses, guys. I do have more questions now than before, but it looks like the thing to do (for the near future, anyway) is just keep the USB data cable I have for my Sanyo SPCS phones and use that in cases of limited connectivity.
Next question- do any of those GPRS/EvDO PC-CARDs work with Linux?
