has a discussion on coverage. If you look at the coverage maps for
Sprint linked there, you will find that though they may currently have
less EVDO coverage in SOCAL, they have plans to cover most or all of
what Verizon covers, maybe more. Sprint shows plans to add coverage
along the 15 and the 40 out in the desert.

The 5740 does not have a connector for an external antenna. The
current recommendation is that if you go with Verizon, get the KPC650.
If you go with Sprint, get the V620. See http://www.evdoinfo.com .
They sell both cards at a discount from what you can get them from
Verizon or Sprint and they are experienced at supporting people with
Macs.

Both have the $60 a month plan if you have a qualifying voice plan,
but Sprint's 200 minute plan is only $30, while Verizon's minimum
voice plan is $40 for 450 minutes, so if you don't need the extra
minutes, Sprint can save you money. Also Sprint's unlimited night and
weekend minutes start at 7 p.m. versus 9 p.m. for Verizon.

Others have also found that Sprint download speeds were generally
faster, while Verizon's upload speeds were a little faster, though
probably not enough that you'd notice unless you were doing speed
tests.
