5G Wireless and UCLA Anderson School of Management Partner on Wireless Initiative

MARINA DEL REY, Calif., Dec 3, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- 5G Wireless Communications, Inc. (FGWC) announced today that the 5G Wireless Wi-Fi solution will provide the wireless infrastructure for the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

"The major value of wireless is convenience," said Dr. Jason Frand, assistant dean and director, Anderson Computing and Information Services. According to Dr. Frand, UCLA Anderson School's faculty, staff and students can now work and be connected anywhere inside or outside the school's seven-building complex through one central access point that provides continuous coverage.

5G Wireless set up a beta test program for the UCLA Anderson Computing and Information Services' networking group. 5G Wireless technology ran in test mode for two months, during which time the company qualified distances and throughput not only in the school's common areas, but also through the buildings and into the classrooms to standard 802.11b Wi-Fi PC cards via the same single access point.

5G Wireless was able to achieve non-line-of-sight penetration through the brick infrastructure and into the classrooms using one access point, meeting UCLA Anderson's requirement to provide all common areas of the school with wireless connectivity. "What could have taken other providers 20 or more access points, we achieved with one, with throughput ranging from over 700 kbps to 4 mbps," said John P. Kelly, vice president, business development for 5G Wireless.

The installation of the 5G Wireless Wi-Fi roaming network will be completed by mid-December, with plans to roll it out in January when school reopens after the winter break. Peter Trepp, president and chief operating officer of 5G Wireless, commented, "5G Wireless will be a solid partner in supporting UCLA Anderson in implementing this innovative wireless solution."
