I would suggest a LiveCD first, and dual-boot later.
A LiveCD is the absolute safest, zero-risk way to try Linux. Since it
doesn't touch the hard drive, the worst thing that could happen is that
it won't work (unlikely) and you lose $1 for the cost of the CD. So even
the most hesitant, risk-adverse person has nothing to fear.
If the LiveCD works, you'll also be more confident that the dual-boot
system will work. Since the LiveCD tests for hardware compatibility, so
it removes 95% of the things that could go wrong.
