Try setting the HDD jumper to cable-select (as outlined in the HDD label). Cable-select is probably the safest configuration mode. On the IDE cable: I would suggest installing the IDE connector with the red cable to the right (i.e., on the first pin). But I do not think it will be the source of your problem.
