Thanks everyone for the responses, there has been a boatload of recommendations that I'll definitely look into.
At the moment, it seems the estimated dns load on the boxes is rather high, so I've gone with building a test setup (using a 4501), and if that actually handles the load we can output from the test setup here, then we'll be hounding Soekris for the 5501's :-) And now it's time for me to start looking into some of the great alternatives here...
