Hi,

I just installed FreeBSD 6.2-release on my net4801
on a 100 GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1 hard drive.
Before installation I flashed the BIOS on the Soekris
to 1.30, since the disksize reported by the BIOS was incorrect.

The installation went smooth, however I'm a bit worried
about the hard drive, since the LED is almost always on
for no apparent reason. When I say went smooth,
Everything went as it should, the only thing that was
Complaining was the fdisk utility, saying that the reported
structure was incorrect. I'm guessing the LBA algorithm in
The Soekris BIOS wasen't able to figure it out.

When FreeBSD is loaded, the hdd led switches on permanent more
or less, and I can't figure out why.
When the Soekris awaits in the BIOS, the hdd isn't doing anything.

I'm still using the generic kernel.
Compiled a new one on another install, but it didn't make any
difference.

I read a thread posted back in 2005, where a guy had a problem
with OpenBSD 3.7 which seems to fit my problem aswell.

Even if I (nicely ;) kill everything besides login, getty and devd
the problem persists.

I was lucky enough to borrow another Net4801, used the same hdd,
installed from stratch, and the problem is found on that box aswell.

Syslog does not really report anything at all.

I tried disabling DMA in loader.conf, and tried the various PIO
modes, but it didn't make a difference regarding the hdd led.

The problem also shows when booting in single-user mode.

Is there anyone who has an idea on what to do next ?

I'm not sure if its a hdd, soekris, bios or freebsd
issue i'm facing.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
Søren Elleby Sørensen
