Yes, there is both a CF card and a 2.5" hard disk (jumpered for slave, but I tried cable-select as well with no change). They're both detected properly with the Fedora Core 6 installer, so the hardware is probably okay. Fedora 7 and 8, though, both fail to detect the disks. (All three kernels are booted with PXE.) The ATA drivers have gone through some change, connected, I think, with wanting to see explicit PCI devices for the ATA controllers. That's why I thought the BIOS modifications might help, since there was mention of translating the MSR interface to PCI. Would I brick my net4801 if I try the net5501 BIOS? > Don't know about Fedora, other net4801 owners are running Linux on > these embedded computers; perhaps another flavour. However, BSDs > (e.g., OpenBSD) are excellent choices for Soekris computers. I've been running Linux (Fedora Core 6) on another net4801 for quite a while and it has been working fine. A BSD would be reasonable too, but I have only a little experience with them, so there would be a learning curve. I'd like to avoid making a custom kernel for the box---it's easier on everyone if the box can be installed with the popular recent stock Linux distributions if at all possible.
