Thanks for all the useful replies, on and off list.

It's definitely looking like a temperature problem.  With the lid off  
and the hard disk over to the side, the Make Buildworld has been  
running for 14 hours now without problems.    CPU temperature is  
reported by the Env4801 port as 52 degrees C, and the chip certainly  
feels very hot to the touch.  Ambient temperature is about 20 degrees C.

I am told that the net4801 doesn't normally exhibit this kind of  
problem, but as it's out of warranty, I guess my next step should be  
to try fixing a small heatsink to the CPU, to see whether that will  
give enough heat dissipation to fix the problem -- always assuming  
that it's the CPU chip that's failing when the problem occurs.   
Failing that I'll just have to add a fan, but I would prefer not to  
add a fan to a fanless computer if it can be avoided.
