So with 8.10 and 9.04 I had problems with the installer via serial. You
might have to setup a kickstart file to get it where you want. It felt
buggy, but I couldn't interact with it....either because it was configured
incorrectly by me or actually buggy. I got 9.10 installed which is the
closest thing to an upcoming LTS release I could get. 8.04 has been out,
but if I wanted the next LTS on the box, I'd have to relearn the whole
thing, so my research should help me roll right into 10.04.

The getty/grub thing _is_ documented for Ubuntu 7.x & 8.x. Getty and grub
changed in Karmic along with several other things and these were not _well_
documented when I went through the process as of November 09'. If you get
8.10 on the box then you are probably fine going with what documentation is
out there.

And I've used an IOgear USB to serial adapter on these before so the problem
has to be with pxelinux.cfg and txt.cfg using ttyUSB0 instead of ttyS0. If
I understand your setup correctly, I bet if you change that you can use your
laptop, since that is just a client side configuration of minicom. You know
your setup best, so maybe it's best not to muck with it.

As for the ComBIOS upgrade stuff. I documented that you have a very short
amount of time to send the file....something like 5 seconds or less to
initiate the process, select the file, and send it up. That was aggravating
at first, but good to know. Hope this helps. Good luck.
