A bit more info:

After about some 20 or 30 power-off/power-on cycles, and hundreds of 
corresponding POST tests, I pressed the reset button.
And whow: I got FreeBSD to boot! (This was on 3Gb/s; i.e. withOUT the 
1.5Gb/s jumper).
However, after shutting down FreeBSD and trying again, the same old POST 
failures continue, and I have not been successfull with reset either.

But as far as I can see this means that the soekris 5501 hardware and 
the Barracuda can actually work together.
So I guess the problem is in the BIOS somehow?
