If you want to power a 3.5" disk from the internal 5501 SATA power connector, then only the WD Green Power disks work reliable, according to my experiences. Other drives suck way too much power at startup so they get missed during the BIOS detection or they just prevent the 5501 from booting all together http://soekris.kd85.com/images/dsc/tn/dsc07815.jpg.html There are ways around it, you can get a converter from 12 V to 12 & 5 V to power the harddisk like this: http://soekris.kd85.com/images/tn/dsc07830.jpg.html and connect that to the 12 V power supply and power both the disk and the 5501 from that. By the way, I noticed that if you power the 5501 with a 16 V or heigher power supply (like an IBM laptop power supply), it does not boot the 5501 + WD Green Power disk. 12 V works just fine. The 5501 is designed to be used with 2.5" drives, not 3.5" drives.
