Regarding damaging it, it shouldn't but the current draw is going to go up on the battery as the voltage drops. one could protect the battery by disconnecting the soekris automatically with an undervoltage protection device... the could be a simple as NO relay with a stack of resistors in front of it so that the input voltage from the battery isn't sufficientt to latch it below 10v.
