Yes, should not be a problem, I've been running 500GB drives in several net5501s for a year or so. BTW, if you buy off the shelf USB based external disk drives, they are likely based on 2.5 SATA drives. Just take them apart, remove the USB to SATA adapter and install them in the 5501.
