I like mini-box.com for the quick fix. For example, I currently use a
15V/8A brick for my my main power input into a picoUPS and a SLA
battery for backup. The output of the picoUPS goes to (among other
things) a net5501 and an M4-ATX power supply, which will operate on a
wide range of input voltage. The M4's ATX connector powers an Atom
server, with the 4-pin connector powering a picopsu 80 (which is
fussier about 12V) on a second server. I will be using 5V from the M4
to power a small ATA in the near future.

It's not exactly a typical home user's setup, but I trust the mini-box
hardware to take abuse for a good number of hours and keep my power in
spec with the help of the battery backup. Somebody that's strong in
DIY electronics could probably come up with something more elegant for
less money, but mini-box makes it easy.
