Hi all! I've seen some talk on this list from people who lament the lack of an internal IDE bridge for Compact Flash cards like the Net4x and Net5x series had. I miss that nice flash slot too, so I thought you'd be interested to see the results of a little experiment I did in my lab.
Goal: To build a PFSense firewall on a Net6501 without using any internal, large disks - like our old Compact Flash based Net5501 builds. I located a Micro USB key (4GB) with the right dimensions that, when disassembled, fits perfectly into a Net6501 case. After flashing the firmware to USB boot and installing PFSense (from a second USB key on the front of the case) I have a Net6501 with an internal, securely-mounted USB boot device and a free USB port on the front to store firewall config backups. Photos here for illustration: http://foofus.com/amuse/net6501/ An unmodified, stock PFSense image is also available if you want to try it. I used DD with bs=16k to make the image: http://foofus.com/amuse/net6501/pfsense-2.0.1-net6501-jp5boot.img.bz2 Hope this helps someone! _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list [email protected] http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
