Hi AMuse. Using a USB flash device as small storage is a nifty and cheap solution, if you do not need high performance or reliability.
But instead of chopping a HP USB stick I suggest you look for example for the "SanDisk cruzer fit" series, varying from 4 to 16 GB. You can get them at many online shops, soekris.com and soekris.eu are selling them also. We also have them on stock and for that have them tested: Working quite fine, and fitting perfectly in the case with even some space left between the stick and the case lit.
