Hi List,

I don't expect Soekris to comment on 32 bs 64-bit, because the Intel
CPUs used in the net6501 officially do not support 64-bit mode.
Yes, it happens to work fine, but that's not something you can
guarantee, much less advertise. Now that public attention has been
drawn to the issue, I wonder if Soeren might have to "fix" it. Oh
well.

I have talked with Intel about it, but haven't managed to get any clear authoritive answer.... More like, yes, 64 bit is enabled, but we don't support the use of it ???

I don't think it will be dropped, some of Intel's NDA'ed embedded roadmaps have the E6xx series supporting 64 bit mode, but all released docs have the E6xx as 32 bit only. The only thing worrying me is if it's not tested so some parts may fail, but then, if the CPUID "Intel 64" bit are set then they kinda have to test it....

And no, I can't do anything to affect it, either in the board hardware or BIOS, it's down in the processor core.

Now that Intel has announced the new Silvermont Atoms with all the
goodies (AES-NI, RDRAND, and of course 64-bit mode), I'm wondering
how long it will take for these to trickle through to Soekris-format
boxes.

Will be the net6801, but no firm schedule yet from Intel.
