btw, in future it's probably best to add a sf.net bug for these "long term 
but important" tasks. ;) Then it's easy before rolling out a release to 
check whether any pending API/ABI cleanup is needed. We could even have a 
list of "in case we break the 1.12 API, change these as well" items.

I'd say these can be removed. No clients are using it, and they have been 
deprecated at 1.12.0 release. In the unlikely case that some software is 
impacted by this change, we'll treat it as a bug and add the functions 
back to the next release.
