Jim,
I had exactly the same problem when developing my new software and testing
it with the Delta 44 I had just bought.
I made some investigations and discovered that the sound card driver failed to
send interrupts when it should have done it.
Then I contacted the M-Audio support group and (after a few weeks.....) they
answered telling me exactly what you
discovered by yourself, i.e. if just the couple 1 and 2 or the couple 3 and 4
of the channels is used, then that setting
should be set to Independent. The Delta 44 is mainly used for sound recording
in music studios, and for them it is
essential to keep the 4 channels perfectly in synch, and this can be achieved
only if the channels 1 - 2 interrupts do
not happen until channels 3 - 4 are initialized. So, if you leave that setting
to "Single and In-Synch" the normal flow
of buffer-filled interrupts does not happen until all four channels are
properly initialized.
So, it is not a bug, but rather a feature of the driver, which makes sense
given the intended normal usage of that sound
card.
