SDR For The Masses, Part 5

I was thinking of several portable digital shortwave receivers I have had.
And if one had an inexpensive one that was AM only. But dual conversion in
scheme and using tuning steps of 1 Khz resolution. Then a qaud detector kit
added to that sort of receiver would work nicely next to the PC. Hence PLL
control and digital frequency readout. With fancy push buttons and a nice look
with the PC that compliments it. At a low cost.

If you are familiar with such receivers you know that the conversion scheme
and tuning step features I mentioned are available in Grundig as well as Sony
and Sangean radios. The SSB versions naturally cost a lot more. You would not
need SSB in the receiver when you have it in the software so a $50 to $70 range
receiver would do the trick if you just want to scan the HF band bands
listening to broadcast. Yet, the PLL controlled receiver could do some amatuer
bands work if you are listening at the PC.

Here there is a need for a local radio tech and he or she will want to buy
the kits and customize the receivers. And there will no doubt be mail order
operations for such radios modified with the quad detector kits. C. Crane
Company does some modifications now on such radios, adding antenna jacks, etc.

I would say that if one goes this route then they will get the idea of SDR to
market and into the publics knowledge. And there is the need for publications
on SDR and I mean a quarterly magazine and maybe monthly magazine or else a
newsletter at least. And then there are the websites that will spring up for
radio and kit sales.
