It has been an idea that has been re-invented several times due to
the lack of communications, but with the Internet now, the cat is out
of the bag.

As far as history, the Japanese version has been out for quite a
while so it's not a secret, it has a interesting name "merrygo" does
that have a Japanese meaning or is it a play on the  Merry goround.
