Andy,
in my code, in various programs, I have always used the convention
that I goes to the left channel
(tip of the jack) and Q to the right channel (ring of the audio jack).
I have seen that also other programs adhere to this standard, with the
notable exception of the
SDR-1000 / PowerSDR, which use the opposite convention.
Standards are so beautiful, that's why there are so many....:-)
