  The dds_controller group has a program to control my 995x board(it has a 
PIC18F2550 - 
same as a 4550 with less I/O pins).  It controls the board from the USB port. 
You may have 
to change your interconnections for it to work on your board.   In the files 
area is the firmware 
that makes the PIC look like a serial port to Windows.  The firmware also has a 
bootstrap 
loader which allows all future firmware updates to be done via the USB port 
rather than the 
ISP lines and a separate programmer.
