I successfully used nested referenced model back in 2009 with XSI 7.0.
I was working on a series where the main characters had almost one costume
per episode:

We had per costume "master" models imported as reference, which had two
nested references models one was the chararcter's body+rig and the other the
costume itself that may had it's own rig or just be skinned on the body's
one.
This was very flexible, and we never had any problems with this setup.
