Pressing ESC kills the current 'mode' and is your back door when things go bad.
It's a holdover from Softimage|3D, but is not universally integrated like it
was in Softimage|3D.
Example:
You're in a pick session and pick the wrong object by accident but the
tool doesn't provide a cancel option. Press ESC and it's as if the pick
session never happened.
If you're in a modal dialog, ESC cancels and closes the dialog. Equivalent to
pressing the 'cancel' button.

Matt, you don't know if your problem is the same as this. There is no obvious
link between some elusive notification system, timeline or whatever and O/P/Z
tools.
Btw, what's with the "until I hit escape" bit? I'm not aware of anything
linked to the ESC key in Softimage and getting in and out of tools?
