in xsi you can use "texturemapname.<udim>.tif" if I am not wrong... at least with arnold.as Orlando said is really straight forward. But in case you have a mari/xsi/arnold pipeline... I would look into creating a script that recreates the ".tx" files when you output them from mari,at the past studio I was we had this automated from mari, if not the artist would've need to recreate manuallyall the ".tx" files for the files that come from mari.
