I know some bits, I don't have the experience to compare nDynamic vs
what's in Softimage, however since I worked on XGen, I can briefly
clarify how it relates to that.

XGen is something to do render-time instancing of "things", and one of
the ways to do hair with it is to drive primitives using guide hair
("Groomable Splines"), which will be interpolated at render time.
XGen doesn't do any dynamics in it, it's only render-time.

So, ironically, the way to have that hair have dynamics is to use
nHair and drive the xgen guide curves with it, for which we have a
button.

There are XGen grooming tools, but we're talking about simple brushes
http://tinyurl.com/mms9uwb , which are similar to the Joe Alter subset
we have in XSI.

And.. there is also brush-based tool to groom nHair. The tool is
called is called Paint Hair Follicles in the nHair menu and you can
pick which attribute to paint. Adjusting clumping/stiffness/etc is
done there. It have a thing or two, like braiding, that xgen doesn't.

In Maya, I think nHair is a good place to start for an individual
looking to do a head of hair. For furry creatures, there are
challenges for which XGen would be better, at the cost of a more
technical setup.
