I got late to the discussion :) so I will just throw my 2 cents on
it.
I am precisely now, working on a CAT proyect for an old Yaesu, and I
am almost done with it.
I ended up implementing a full CAT controller for it, using Kenwood
commands (the only ones remotely standardized), using a PIC 18F4550, USB and
the microchip CDC (virtual COM) driver.
And it is working!

The page is about one week behind, perhaps this weekend I will have
some time to update it, upload photos, and firmware.
This very same firmware could be modified, and used with a simpler
18F2550 28 pins. (I needed many IO pins in my project).
