Jack, The default setup has the baud rate set at 9600 but can be changed as well as several other parameters after power up. This chip takes care of all of the timing issues with I2C and has a built in buffer to help. If desired it can be interfaced with a PIC our other uP over 2 wires [and gnd of course].
