Sounds like the fuse problem I had on my Harvey ('72
CB500). Or, more correctly, the fuse holder problem.

Dicing and splicing will fix the problem, or if it isn't
the fuse holder now, will keep it from happening. Replace
the existing fuse(s) and fuse holder(s) with modern
two-blade types. You can get the holders at WalMart and
splice 'em in where the old holder(s) went. Then put a
fuse of the same rating into the new holder, and you're
good to go.
