Holy toledo, he's 6'6" and 225! I was going to
suggest my old CL175, but I think that's out of the
question.

The newer Nighthawk 750 is a pretty nice machine. Not
as modern technically as some competitors, but good.
And he'll get familiar with the size after a couple of
days. If he takes the MSF course, he'll probably be
fine with the 750. As much as he likes Hondas, he
should also consider the Suzuki SV650.

I have a 1979 CBX that should fit a big monster like
him just fine, once he's had a few miles under his
belt.

The CX500 and CX650 are very good bikes, solid,
reliable. And cheap, these days. And I think I
mentioned that my buddy is still selling his 1977
CB400F. But that's probably too small for your son.

I would not recommend a new bike at this time. As
with most new riders, he's going to dump it over at
least once. Even if it's just forgetting to put the
kickstand down, seems like every new rider has a
tip-over of some sort early on. But the older
machines do not need to be maintenance-intensive, and
they can be reliable.

BTW, as an aside, tell your son that DC is a
bike-buyer's paradise. Lots of rich yuppies buy
bikes, let them sit in the garage a few years, and
then sell them during spring cleaning frenzy. It's
not unusual to find a bike that's 5-10 years old with
less than 2,000 miles on it!. In fact, if he wants to
test ride a showroom condition 1989 GB500 with only
3,000 miles on it, I can point him to one. It's not
for sale, but the owner rides it so little it could
sure use some exercise.
