Paramount Chief threatens to vacate village over insecurity
Thursday, 12 January 2012 09:31 South Sudan >>> .The paramount chief
of Twic East County in Jonglei State, Manyok Ajak, has threatened to
vacate his village with his people if the central government does not
improve the security in the state.

Jonglei has been engulfed in a series of inter-communal clashes in
Twic, Bor, Jalle, Akobo, Likuangole and Pibor counties since August
last year.

"These guns killing us don't belong to civilians, they are for the
government. When you disagree in leadership, some of you run away and
supply weapons and start killing the people," he said on Wednesday at
the welcoming ceremony of the reappointed Commissioner of Twic East
County.

"If the government is giving anything to the civilians, give us
protection, give us protection. If the government does not do
anything, we shall take our children to foreign countries like you. We
shall leave the country and see if you will continue in that
leadership," the chief added.

He urged the government to deploy more police officers to the state to
deter the inter-tribal killings and start the disarmament process.

However the county commissioner, Dau Akooi Jurkuch, down played the
threats, saying the paramount chief does not understand the complexity
of the security situation on ground.

Dau instead blamed the county leaders for failing to contain the
clashes since they are closer to the people.

"The community is always blaming the commissioner because we are a
closer authority to the community. Whatever the need of the community
that is not supported by the government, the community immediately
start to blame the commissioner because the governor or the president
is very far, the commissioner is the target but we accept that, it is
their right," said Dau.
