President Kiir rebukes the Jonglei Cow Emblem
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 09:27 South Sudan >>> .South Sudan's
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has rebuked the emblem of the Jonglei
State government for inciting violent killings and cattle rustling.

The troubled state has a cow as its emblem which the president blamed
for being the cause of a series of inter-communal killings since last
year in the state.

Speaking during the launch of disarmament operation at the state
capital Bor on Monday, President Kiir said that the symbol of a cow on
Jonglei's state flag should be removed, if cattle rustling persists.

"This picture of a cow on your flag should be changed. This is cow is
killing you," he lamented.

"Are you the only ones who have cows in the South? Cows are in many
places, why die for these only," the president asked.

"If you don't stop this, we shall discuss and make a decree to change
this flag. You sing good songs, you're Jonglei that you love you're
Jonglei. Do you love Jonglei when you are killing yourselves? Who will
remain"?

The Jonglei crisis has been on since August last year in which scores
of people mainly women and children have been killed and hundreds of
thousands displaced.

Cattle raiding to pay for dowry and revenge against each other have
been identified as some of the factors fueling the attacks.
