Bashir meets Mbeki and sets condition for peace
Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:56 Lagu Francis South Sudan >>> . Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir says he is committed to having lasting peace with South Sudan, if Juba stops supporting rebels in the border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Khartoum accuses Juba of supporting rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) which is fighting the Sudanese army in both states, an accusation South Sudan has always denied. According to SUNA, Bashir's statement came after meeting African Union's (AU) Thabo Mbeki on Saturday. Mbeki, AU chief mediator between the two Sudans on post independence issues, is trying to bring both sides back to the negotiating table. Though South Sudan became independent in July under a 2005 peace agreement with Khartoum, the two neighbours failed to agree on border demarcation, oil revenues and citizenships. The disagreements caused hostilities between two countries which the AU under the leadership of Mbeki is trying to mend. Bashir told Mbeki that to achieve peace; South Sudan should not attack Sudan again, following last month's capture of Heglig by the former's army. South Sudan after pressure from the international community and UN Security Council withdrew from Heglig. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
