SPLA accuses Khartoum of arming mercenaries

Sudan Radio Service Juba, 21/05/12 - The spokesperson of the SPLA is
alleging that Khartoum is arming mercenaries to attack SPLA positions
in Unity State.
Aguer has repeatedly warned that the SPLA will retaliate if the SAF
attacks the SPLA.
He spoke to SRS in Juba on Monday.
[Philip Aguer]: “Khartoum is still arming the militias from the same
bases in Panthau (Heglieg) and Karasana. We are monitoring a convoy of
militia mercenaries that are being armed and sent by Khartoum to come
and attack SPLA in Unity State. We will not allow this to happen. If
they attack us the SPLA has the right to retaliate they will be
pursued until we reach where they are always armed.”
Efforts to reach the SAF spokesperson for a comment were unsuccessful.

SPLA: Militia detected in Unity State

Radio Miraya Juba, 21/05/12 - The Sudan People's Liberation Army
(SPLA) on Monday said it has detected movements of a militia group in
Unity State, South Sudan.
SPLA spokesperson, Col. Philip Aguer says the militants appear to be
stationed in Abiemnhom and Mayom counties. Col Aguer told Radio Miraya
on Monday, that the SPLA is on standby to prevent any possible threat.
"The biggest concern that we have is that Khartoum is still supporting
militiamen along the borders, particularly in Unity State".
"For the last three days, we are monitoring a move of a convoy of
militiamen and mercenaries from Kilo Talata wu Shirin; that is between
Panthou/Heglieg and Karasana".
"This group is moving towards Mayom and Abiemnhom counties. We are
alerting the public that if this happens and these militiamen, if they
attack one of our bases or the civil population in Unity State, the
SPLA will retaliate," he explained.
In a related development, Col. Aguer said the country is in the
process of acquiring a radar system that would be able to detect any
violation of South Sudanese airspace. Aguer says the equipment should
be up and running in the next six months.
Aguer confirmed to Radio Miraya that there have been cases of Antonovs
flying over South Sudan as they head to Congo and the Central African
Republic.
"We are aware that Khartoum has been sending Antonovs to borders of
Congo to supply the Ugandan terrorist group - LRA and when they go
back to Northern Sudan they usually make these aggressive air
violations.
Sudanese authorities were not available for a comment.
