US Dollar scarcity causes fuel shortage in Juba
Tuesday, 17 July 2012 06:17 Mabior Mach South Sudan >>> . South Sudan's capital Juba is facing a fresh spell of fuel shortages. For the last three days, vehicles and boda-boda motor cycles have been lining up in long queues at the few fuel stations. Mariel Garang Kuai, the assistant manager of Oil Company Ltd, a private company importing fuel, told Radio Miraya on Tuesday that the cause of the fuel shortage was due to limited supply of dollars to import more fuel. Mariel said that even though the Central Bank directed commercial banks to make more dollars available to fuel dealers, accessibility remained very limitted. "The issue is dollars; we are not getting dollars and all this we buy in dollars. We still don't know the reason why they don't give us dollars, me personally I don't know. But we know in the Central Bank they have dollars and when we sell here in our country we sell in pounds," said Kuai. "When we get those pounds, to get more fuel it is not easy and we registered our company; we have all the certificates which we think can allow us to transfer our money to that account in Kenya or Dubai, but it is still not easy," Kuai explained. The Central Bank in April this year, announced that it was releasing one million dollars to commercial banks every week, to allow fuel suppliers access to dollars to purchase fuel and food items. The recurring shortage of fuel follows the shutdown of oil production in the country in January this year. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
