The Minister of Telecommunication and Postal Services, Madut Biar Yel,
told parliament on Monday that the government plans to reduce the
number of phone towers in Juba in an effort to reduce "tower
pollution."

Madut made the remark during the deliberation on a provisional on
communication issued earlier by President Salva Kiir.

"There was no legal framework that can regulate the installation of
towers, and as a result, there were some problems that actually we
want to catch out when the bill is passed. One of the issues which
actually left out and a very important for our environmental impact is
that we are having what we call, in telecom sector, tower pollution.
In Juba here, we have over thirty towers. This is what actually we are
going to regulate. Electromagnetic radiation is also another problem
we are going to regulate," the minister said.

Madut encouraged the telecommunication companies to construct towers
in the rural areas.

He said that in the capital Juba, there should be only two phone towers.

Madut said the ministry will license one company to build towers
across the country in the future.
