Unity focuses on private farms to promote food production

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in Unity State, Samuel Lony Geng, said his ministry is putting more focus on supporting private farming as a means of promoting agriculture and food production in the state. Lony, said the ministry will train and provide agricultural tools to individual farmers across the state. The minister told Radio Miraya that the initiative is being promoted due to difficulties being faced in managing public farms. "You know managing public farms proved to be not effective, so we moved away from doing public farms. We rather encourage private sector and individual farmers, so our major work is extension work. We deployed extension [workers] in the counties and we also have good extension workers in the state here. So our role is to provide inputs for the farmers: bring seeds, bring tools and do the training, capacity building for the farmers. That is what we are measuring in," Lony told Radio Miraya on Monday. At least 75 percent of the population in Unity State are farmers and many of them lost their produce in floods in August.
