Horn of Africa Course
Saturday 8 - Friday 14 June

The Horn of Africa course covers Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia,
Somaliland, and north-eastern Kenya.

This year’s course takes places amid new uncertainties in the region. Recent
political developments include the creation of a post-transition government in
Somalia led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, critical elections in
earlyMarch in Kenya, reports of a coup attempt in Eritrea, and new leadership
in Ethiopia following the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in August 2012.
There have also been encouraging signs of economic growth across much of the
region, and a shift in security threats as al-Shabaab is reported to be
relocating to northern Somalia.

The 2013 Horn Course will offer a multi-disciplinary examination of these and
other developments, exploring the impact of changes in leadership at national
and sub-national level, and the deep historical background of events in the
region.
The Director of Studies of the Horn Course is Ken Menkhaus, Associate Professor
of Politics at Davidson College. He is joined by a teaching staff consisting of
the following: Mark Bradbury, RVI Horn of Africa and East Africa Regional
Director; Dereje Feyissa of the Institute of Federal Studies at Addis Ababa
University; Rakiya Omaar, Director of African Rights; Laura Hammond of the
School of Oriental and African Studies, London; Christopher Clapham, Emeritus
Professor of Politics and International Relations at the Unversity of
Cambridge; Berouk Mesfin, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Security
Studies in Addis Ababa; Cedric Barnes, Horn of Africa Project Director at the
International Crisis Group; Lee Cassanelli, of the University of Pennsylvania;
Kjetil Tronvoll, Professor of Human Rights at the University of Oslo; Richard
Reid of the School of Oriental and African Studies; RVI Fellow Sally Healy; and
Shiferaw Bekele of the University of Addis Ababa.

Great Lakes Course
Saturday 22 - Friday 28 June

Since April 2012, the M23 rebellion has prompted another escalation of
violence. Armed groups have mobilized both in support of and opposition to the
rebels throughout North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo, a process documented in a series of reports from the RVI’s
Usalama Project (http://www.riftvalley.net/publications) . In Rwanda, several
donors have cut bilateral aid in response to reports of Rwandan government
support to the M23. Burundi has remained distant from these conflicts but
internal political turmoil and the problems of transitional justice continue to
dominate the headlines there.

RVI's 2013 Great Lakes Course covers Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC, with an
emphasis on the Kivus and their borderlands. English and French are the
languages of instruction, with simultaneous translation between them. This
year's course, in addition to coverage of the history and politics of the
countries of the region, will cover cross-border topics such as natural
resources, including recent oil discoveries in the Albertine Rift between the
DRC and Uganda, and the renewed activities of armed groups across the region.
The Director of Studies, Jason Stearns, will be joined by Emily Paddon,
Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Oxford, as Deputy
Director of Studies, by Koen Vlassenroot of the University of Ghent, Omar
McDoom, Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics and
Political Science, and Jean Omasombo of the Royal Museum for Central Africa at
Tervuren. Other teaching staff include Emmanuel de Mérode, Director of the
Virunga National Park in DRC, who will discuss conservation in conflict;
Michael Kavanagh, who will discuss secret mining deals and the impact of the
Dodd-Frank bill on the trade in conflict minerals; and Willy Nindorera,
specialist in Burundian politics. Further teaching staff will be announced in
coming weeks.

Sudan and South Sudan Course
Saturday 6 - Friday 12 July

The past year in the Sudans has been dominated by unresolved conflict in
Darfur, new insurgencies in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, a growing
humanitarian crisis in the border areas between the two countries, and
continued tension between the governments in Khartoum and Juba. Oil processing
and border disputes are the main areas of contention between the two.
Meanwhile, both economies have been struggling to adapt to the new realities of
separation.

The RVI course on Sudan and South Sudan offers historically informed analysis
of the politics, economics and cultures of the two Sudans, providing the
understanding needed to work in this complex environment. This year's course
will focus on the persistence of conflicts within and between both Sudan and
South Sudan, looking at borders, resource issues and the failures of the state
at the local level.
The course will be under the direction of Justin Willis of the University of
Durham. Dan Large, Project Director of the Sudan Open Archive
(http://www.sudanarchive.net/) , will be the Deputy Director of Studies. The
teaching staff includes Magdi el-Gizouli of Freiburg University, Joanna
Oyediran, Sudan Program Officer of the Open Society Initiative for Eastern
Africa, and Douglas Johnson, author of The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Root-Causes-Sudans-Civil-Wars/dp/1847010296/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1355139655&sr=1-1)
. Other teaching staff on the course: Jok Madut Jok, of Loyola Marymount
University and the Ministry of Cuture and Heritage in the Government of South
Sudan, Cherry Leonardi, lecturer in History at Durham University, Suliman
Baldo, Africa Programme Director of the International Centre for Transitional
Justice, and John Ryle, Executive Director of RVI, and professor of
Anthropology at Bard College, NY.

Stage sur la Corne de l'Afrique
Samedi 8 - vendredi 14 juin

Président Mohamud Hassan Sheikh ; les élections cruciales de ce mars au Kenya ;

Rights ; Laura Hammond, chargée de cours principale à la School of Oriental and
Mesfin, chercheur principal au Institute for Security Studies, basé à
; Kjetil Tronvoll, professeur de droits de l'homme à l'Université d'Oslo ;
Richard Reid, de la School of Oriental and African Studies ; Sally Healy,

(http://www.riftvalley.net/publications) .

Dan
Large, Directeur de projet du Sudan Open Archive (http://www.sudanarchive.net)
, sera le directeur d'études adjoint. L'équipe enseignante comprend Magdi
el-Gizouli de l'Université de Fribourg, Joanna Oyediran, responsable de
programme du Soudan à l'Open Society Initiative for East Africa, et Douglas
Johnson, auteur de The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Root-Causes-Sudans-Civil-Wars/dp/1847010296/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1355139655&sr=1-1)
