BOR, 26 April 2013 [Gurtong] - These are the first textbooks that have
been written and designed by South Sudanese educationalists for South
Sudanese children under a national curriculum.

“The deliveries are part of the ongoing textbook distribution in South
Sudan which is funded by British Government through their Department
for International Development (DFID) and initiated by the South Sudan
Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI),” says a release
from UKAID.

According to their plan, the first 359,000 books will be delivered to
137 learning institutes in Bor, Duk and Twic- East Counties while
another 8 containers with books for schools in Urol County are in
transit between Kampala and Juba.

“Additional supplies for Nyirol, Piji, Old Fangak, Pibor, Pochalla
andAkobo County are being packed in Kampala,” it adds.

The primary schools and ALP centres in Jonglei State, both private and
public, will receive more than 1.4 million books and other reading
materials which will benefit around 467,000 pupils and mature
students.

The deliveries are expected to take at least 6 weeks depending on the
road conditions and the security situation in the State.

They indicated that national textbook distribution started in December
2012 in parts of Eastern Equatoria and is taking place in all ten
States in South Sudan. So far one quarter of all schools and about one
fifth of all ALP centres in South Sudan have been supplied with books.

The schools will receive textbooks, teacher guides and readers in the
five core subjects of Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, C.R.E. and
English.

“The primary pupils in Grade 1 to 4 will have access to his or her own
textbooks while in Grade 5 to 8 three pupils will have to share the
books. In the ALP centres every three students will share their books
which cover the five core subjects,” said the release.

The ratio of distribution to the schools is based on their enrolment
figures as provided by the Ministry of General Education and
Instruction (MoGEI) in 2012.

The data were revised following a series of workshops with County
Education Directors from all States between October 2012 and March
2013.

The County Education Offices will receive a buffer stock to supply
copies of the books to new schools and cater for increased demand in
existing schools.

Besides Jonglei, the distribution is in progress in Warrap, Lakes and
Western Bahr el Ghazal State while winding up in Northern Bahr el
Ghazal and Central Equatoria.

“Further deliveries for Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, Western Equatoria,
Upper Nile and Unity State are being processed in Juba and Kampala
while the assessment of supply routes and location of schools in
Western Equatoria State is ongoing,” it says.
