Oh, I think there is no hurry. The freeze for the next LTS version of  
Ubuntu is still some six weeks away, and Debian is frozen anyway.

So you'd prefer to have less breakage? This would mean we should try  
to get as much as possible into libsox3, so that we (hopefully) don't  
have to make a libsox4 soon. I'm especially thinking of getting rid of  
library globals; but that would require an API change.
