How well do you know Charles ?? and (input other names of people we have
brought in)," asked Audra.
"Charles and I are friends from grade school. We grew up together, and have
kept in touch since. The others are friends and aquaintences that I have
made over the years. I would say that I know them as well as one would for
being aquaintences. Why?"
"We have a witness that is willing to state that you and he participated in
a group who's primary mission was to drive a wide wedge between the
Venasians and the Federation. The acts of this group include the bombing of
a shuttle carrying a number of Venasian dignitaries from Spacedock to Earth
a few months bag. According to this source, you played an integral part in
this bombing. While you did not place the explosives aboard the shuttle,
you were key in obtaining the material from one of General A'amon's aides."
Pony answered... "If I had wanted to put a wedge between the Venasians and
the Federation, why would I work with them? That does not seem to make much
sense, now does it? Besides I don't know any General, much less his aides."
"Well, it has come to our attention that there is a group of Venasians who
have similar feelings to those who committed this act. They would love to
cause a permanent rift between their own government in the Federation. What
better way to do that than such an inicident. The goals for both sides were
the same, which would make working with 'undesireables' worthwhile."
"Commander, do you have some more substancial in the form of hard evidence
about this connection between my client and these Venasian thugs? If not,
then I would say that you case is weak. Very weak." the lawyer cut in. As
the legal beagle was talking Firehawk heard Pony mutter, "It would have
worked too if that 'undesireable' had of died in the freakin' shuttle..."
Audra glanced at the lawyer. "It seems that your client would disagree with
you on that count. We have evidence that the explosive used in the bombing
was indeed of Venasian origin. It has also come to our attention that your
client is a leader among a group of dissidents who, evidence shows, probably
committed that crime. We have testimony of at least one of his alleged
associates that he was the one that acquired the explosives." She placed a
PADD on the table containing a listing of all the evidence that had been
collected in the case to date and slid it over to the lawyer.
The lawyer took the PADD and gave it a quick read. "Commander, can you give
me a moment with my client. In private?"
Audra nodded before she and her team stepped out of the room.
About 20 minutes later there was a knock on the door. Grimes opened the
door, and they re-entered the room.
"My client is now prepared to make a statement. He makes this statement
against advice of counsel."
that Pony had folded this easily. It did not fit with what they had found
out
about him.
Grimes was taken aback by this. This somehow did not fit in with the
profile they had worked up on Pony. What ever he was going to say it was
going to be interesting.
"I know Charles. He and I are friends, and have been we were kids We are
both part of a brotherhood of like minded beings that feel that by allying
ourselves with the Venasians, or those like them, we only give away our
soverignty. We give up our advantage. We give up our position of influence
in the galaxy. Thr Brotherhood believes that those that willingly work with
the Venasians or work to better our alliance with them are traitors to the
Federation and to everything that countless beings have fought and died for.
We blame President Montgomery, certain members of the Federation Council,
Admiral Lasiter, and Starfleet Command. We are willing to work with certain
elements of the Venasian underground to kill the alliance. We have worked
with the Venasians, of all ranks to further this goal. I have no knowledge
of this General A'amon, nor of his staff. It would only serve the cause of
the Brotherhood to work with such a being if he thought like us. We were
unsuccessful in our first attempt, but we will succeed in other attempts.
Just be patient.
"I did plan the bombing of the shuttle, and the killing of one Chief
Investigator Telax. I have not only planned, but participated in several
acts of sabotage and resistance. I have calluded with dissident members of
the Venasian government and the Venasian Underground. I am a loyal citizen
of the Federation. Loyal to the founding ideals- common strength and common
peace.
"This is all that I have to say as part of this statement."
Audra couldn't help but feel that Pony was either playing the martyr or
taking the fall for someone bigger in this. At the same time, it would
help bring about the resolution of at least the killing of Telax.
The Ops Manager glanced at Grimes. He was more experienced in dealing with
criminals. She hoped he would have a lead as to what to do next. She
wanted to press Pony some more, but was not sure that she should.
Grimes leaned over to Firehawk and whispered, "This seems a bit too easy.
Nothing in his psych profile agrees with what we are seeing here. We have
his dead to rights on several charges, and he just copped to all of them
plus a few others. You seem to be getting the results here. I think you
should press on here. He may give up more. I want to know what is going
on, this is just not quite right....."
Grimes leaned back, then returned, "However, I will have no problems putting
him away. I don't care if we get him for the wrong crime, he is just evil
and the Federation needs protection from him."
Audra was glad to see that her feelings were not displaced. She was not so sure about being willing to arrest Pony for the wrong crimes. First, there was a better likelihood of his getting off. Secondly, she wanted to close this Brotherhood down. That would be easier if its members were brought in for the right reasons.
"Pony, where were the explosives for the bombing obtained and by whom?"
"Don't answer that." cut in his lawyer. Pony ignored the advice. "I arranged to pick them up from a Venasian named Trella. We used the visitor storage lockers in the main civilian terminal for the transfer. He would leave them in a predetermined locker. I would pick them up a few hours later." {response}
